Consumption Since its beginnings, smoking has been portrayed by its sellers as a masculine habit, linked to wealth, power and sexual success yet in reality it leads to sickness and premature death. Although these factors have affected the popularity of smoking worldwide, still over 1 billion men smoke, about 35 percent of men in developed countries and around 50 percent of men in developing countries. Over 300 million men in China smoke; this is an equal amount to the entire population of the USA. Around 250 million women in the World are daily smokers, around 22 percent of women in developed countries and around 9 percent in developing countries. Tobacco companies have even designed brands aimed at women, such as silk cut cigarettes, which gives tobacco usage a feel of sophistication.
